Professor Margaret Wooldridge developed the Introduction to Thermodynamics MOOC based off of a successful, residential U-M class in order to expand access to the tools and analysis required for the study of energy transfer. This course teaches the fundamentals of logistical energy flow for a better understanding of the energy challenges faced by society, and helps students observe and study energy transfer in both small and large scale systems and apply their findings to a myriad of uses. Mastery of this engineering principle provides the learner with the ability to conduct quantitative analysis on energy systems and knowledge of energy use, one of the greatest challenges facing global society. Through teaching this MOOC, Professor Wooldridge has reached thousands of global learners while gleaning insights which she has applied to enhance teaching and material within her on-campus course.
