We invite faculty and staff who teach/design online and hybrid courses or programs to “drop in” to the Center for Academic Innovation’s upcoming open office hours and learn about two critical regulatory updates that may impact their work. Specifically, the hosts will provide resources and respond to questions relating to the new federal definition for “distance education,” which establishes requirements for instructor-student interaction through the “regular and substantive interaction” rule (a video presentation addressing this topic is included below), and the new quality standards articulated in the 21st Century Distance Education Guidelines.

Participants attending these drop-in office hours can expect to:

  • Learn about how new federal rules that took effect on July 1, 2021 apply in the context of online and hybrid courses
    • What the new guidelines around student interaction mean for faculty teaching online courses
    • How to design future online courses to meet federal guidelines
  • Ask policy and implementation questions relating to each of the above updates as well as receive a list of resources, including those available from the Center for Academic Innovation, to assist with implementation
  • Learn about how the new 21st Century Guidelines, which are under consideration for implementation by accreditors and the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA), would apply in the context of online and hybrid courses, and how the University of Michigan community can make their voices heard by contributing to the commenting process.
