AIM Extended Reality (XR)

Event Details

Join us on Tuesday, September 29 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for the first of two virtual AIM XR events for the Fall 2020 semester. While we may be apart, we plan to come together, virtually, to continue to grow the extended reality (XR) community at the University of Michigan (U-M) and beyond throughout the fall semester. This session will feature a live recording of the MiXR Studios podcast hosted by Director of the XR Initiative, Jeremy Nelson and U-M XR Faculty Innovator in Residence, Michael Nebeling. The MiXR Studios Podcast explores the work of faculty, students, and staff at U-M that are building, teaching, and researching XR experiences. Register below to reserve your spot!

In this podcast, we will talk with Michael about his upcoming MOOC specialization, “Extended Reality for Everybody,” and his experiences as the XR Innovator-In-Residence with the Center for Academic Innovation this year. This exciting series of three online courses will explore the knowing, doing, and shaping the future of XR and is designed for learners who want to build a foundation in XR design and development and dive into prototyping and early development. In addition to the MOOC series, we will discuss year one of the XR Initiative and Michael’s role to help shape our thinking. There will be a Q&A session with the audience and we look forward to engaging with you.

Michael Nebeling is an Assistant Professor in the School of Information, where he leads the Information Interaction Lab. His lab investigates new methods, tools and technologies that enable users to interact with information in more natural and powerful ways, and also make it easier for designers to create more usable and effective user interfaces.

Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the HCI Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich, where he also obtained his PhD.

AIM Extended Reality (XR) is an event series hosted by the Center for Academic Innovation exploring how extended reality (XR) is being used in higher education and beyond. This speaker series stems from a Provost to engage in a new campus-wide XR Initiative. This initiative will formally ask us to consider how we can leverage emerging XR technologies to strengthen the quality of a Michigan education, cultivate an interdisciplinary scholarly community of practice at Michigan, and enhance a nationwide network for academic innovation. Learn more about the initiative on our XR initiative page.
