Figuring out the optimal level of advocacy can be tricky, whether you are putting together a legal brief, a grant application, or any other document that requires communicating clearly and compellingly. You don’t want to oversell your case or cause. But you don’t want to undersell it either.

To get some tips on how to find your own sweet spot of persuasion, join Professor Patrick Barry of the University of Michigan Law School for a special workshop tied to “Good with Words: Writing and Editing,” a series of four online courses that just launched on Coursera.

You’ll get more out of the workshop if you have at least started the first week of Course 1 (“Word Choice and Word Order”). But you can certainly still register if you haven’t. Attending could be a good way to sample what taking the full series might be like.

*This virtual event will be recorded and may be published in whole or in part for promotional purposes on University of Michigan websites as well as social media platforms. Your Zoom profile name may also appear in these recordings. Your participation in this event is voluntary, and if you do not wish to appear on video or in recorded audio for these purposes, or if you would like to remain anonymous, you may still participate in the event by using Chat or Q-and-A features and by taking the following steps:

  • Muting your video and audio in Zoom
  • Removing your Zoom profile picture, if applicable
  • Replacing your Zoom name with an alias
