Event Details

Are you interested in MOOCs and the future of education technology? Join edX, a leading online education company, and the Office of Academic Innovation for a Design Jam to build prototypes that will help digital learning platforms better meet the individualized needs of learners, leverage opportunities for social learning and anticipate the future of credentials and records of learning in a digital age.

The Office of Academic Innovation invites any student with interest or experience to participate. Design jams are a great opportunity to practice and learn new skills, network and partner with your peers. Please register below to confirm your participation.

We welcome all U-M students to participate regardless of expertise. Students interested in social learning in online and blended environments and the future of credentials and records of learning might be particularly drawn to this event. Students with interests in learning communities, developing interactive educational tools and products, designing learner experiences in online education or understanding the future of educational credentials and records of learning should consider participating.

EdX representatives will kick off the Design Jam with a discussion of important trends in social learning and the future of credentials.

  • Iain Kennedy is Vice President of Product Development for edX. He is interested in exploring social learning.
  • Marco Morales is a Product Manager from the Learner team at edX. He is intrigued by mobile experiences.
  • Alyssa Boehm supports User Experience at edX and is interested in screenless learning experiences and AI.

Members of the edX team as well as staff from the Office of Academic Innovation will facilitate the Design Jam and will be available during the event to answer questions and offer guidance. We will also be joined by faculty members from President Schlissel’s Academic Innovation Initiative Steering Committee.

Michigan has been a pioneer in leveraging academic innovation to further realize our mission and to imagine again how the world learns from and with a great public research university. Michigan established a strategic partnership with edX in Fall 2015. Both Michigan and edX aim to shape the future of higher education and are engaged in a wide range of experiments to leverage networked access to information, new modes of learning and the power of data analytics to strengthen higher education and to increase access and inclusivity. Millions of learners are accessing new kinds of learning opportunities as a result. With this in mind, this Design Jam will focus on questions related to learning communities, modern credentials, interactive content, mobile design and social learning.

Your contributions will help inform edX’s product development roadmap as well as learning experiences of students who participate in U-M MOOCs and MicroMasters programs.

We hope you’ll join us for this event! Dinner will be provided. Space is limited — please register to confirm your participation.

Please also consider joining us for a public event the night before where U-M President Mark Schlissel, edX CEO Anant Agarwal and a panel of U-M innovators will discuss academic innovation and opportunities to engage pre-college learners.
