Event Details

Join us on Friday, September 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the West Conference Room, 4th Floor, Rackham Graduate School (915 E. Washington St.)  for Traveling Innovation Hour, a gathering co-hosted by the Office of Academic Innovation two times per month featuring a different theme and campus location each session.

Traveling Innovation Hours are informal discussions in which participants discuss a topic or open question related to teaching and learning in higher education that is particularly relevant to the host programs.

This Traveling Innovation Hour will focus on local teaching and learning concerns of U-M’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and School of Information. Faculty, staff, and students of these programs are especially welcome to attend. Brenda Gunderson (LSA), Mika LaVaque-Manty (LSA) and Chris Brooks (SI) will facilitate a conversation on the theme of building flexible learning experiences.

The College of LSA hosts several “gateway courses” that serve large and diverse populations of learners at U-M.  A “one-size-fits-all” approach  for these courses is inadequate, as students’ needs for these courses arise at different times within their educational trajectories. The School of Information is invested in data analytics and promoting broad, interdisciplinary access to skills. How might we develop a synergistic relationship between LSA and SI to design solutions to the challenges of teaching diverse populations at scale?

How do we respond flexibly to students’ needs? How do we make diverse pathways available? What role does the university have in creating learning opportunities to supplement for-credit offerings? How might we adjust our messaging about when and how to take certain courses so that we better support “alternative” pathways? How can we best help students negotiate educational, career, and life trajectories as they develop and change? We look forward to hearing your thoughts!

All are welcome to attend. Please register below to help us plan for refreshments. Registration is not required for attendance.
