Who we’re looking for:

At U-M, researchers are fortunate to have access to such a database of student records called the Learning Analytics Data Architecture (LARC) Data Set. Using the demographic variables within LARC for research studies may seem straightforward, but deep understanding of the variables can be elusive.

The short-term goal of this project is to build a “cheat sheet” for each variable of interest, including gender, race, ethnicity, first- versus continuing-generation status, socioeconomic status, and others. We are looking for data insights (how have the responses changed over time?) as well as contextual information (what question was the student responding to?). Importantly, we aim for these “cheat sheets” to be aesthetically clean and well-designed, akin to those for RStudio.

Required Qualifications:

  • A student working on this project needs to be familiar with some tool for analyzing quantitative data (e.g., Python, R, SAS, SPSS, etc.).
  • Familiarity with SQL
  • An eye for design and making clear, effective charts is a must.

Desired Qualifications (not required to apply):

  • The student should be independent, motivated, and responsive.
