Design Management Fellow

Pay Rate: Undergraduate $17/hr, Master’s $20/hr, Doctoral $23/hr

Who we’re looking for:

The Design Management Team is looking for a driven, detail-oriented, and creative fellow to support the project management of online learning experiences within the portfolio of academic innovation projects at the Center for Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan. The fellow should have interest in or familiarity with Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), Open Educational Resources (OER), and/or Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Coursera.

What You’ll Do:

The fellow will assist the Design Managers in scoping, designing, and developing a wide range of online learning initiatives, including MOOCs, online and hybrid degree courses, Teach-Outs, and other Short Form projects. You can explore our project portfolio on Michigan Online. Depending on availability, interest and skill set, the fellow may dive deeper into certain aspects of the course development process and may assist with other project-related tasks and side projects. Some of the core tasks associated with this role could be:

  • Attend and participate in design meetings with faculty, external partners, and/or other CAI team members; take notes during meetings, synthesize, and draft next steps
  • Assist in ensuring thoughtful and consistent alignment of projects as they pertain to current CAI policies and practices across multiple domains, including copyright, privacy, and accessibility 
  • Build content into Learning Management Systems (e.g. Coursera)
  • Draft project timelines and track development progress
  • Coordinate policy documentation, such as release and waiver forms
  • Identify potential experts for Teach-Outs and aid in scoping their contributions 
  • Promote learner engagement in Teach-Out discussion forums
  • Contribute to design strategy alongside the project’s lead Design Manager

Develop communication and project management skills by working with a diverse group of professionals, across different disciplines, to develop and maintain high-quality educational experiences. The Fellow will build or strengthen technical, organizational, communications, and reporting skills.

Student Qualifications:

  • Coursework or experience in liberal arts, project management, instructional design, information technology, educational technology, business, or a related field
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and excellence at tasks that require specific processes
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (specifically Google Docs, Sheets, Slides)
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects at the same time, balancing priorities and goals accordingly
  • Ability to work well in a multicultural and collaborative environment
  • Emotional intelligence skills to manage complex relationships
  • Strong commitment to problem solving, teamwork, and the ability to act independently
  • Interest in being exposed to subject matter close to and far away from your comfort zone
