Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for a well-rounded, driven, and creative Graphic Design Fellow to support the Marketing and Communications activities of the Center for Academic Innovation. No marketing, communications, or graphic design experience is required, but this is a great opportunity to gain real-world experience in any of these fields.

As an integral member of the team, you’ll have the opportunity to shape your fellowship experience based on your interests as they align with the functions and goals of our Marketing and Communications team. As a Graphic Design Fellow, you’ll have an opportunity to:

  • Gain real-world social media content development experience interacting with our more than 180K followers across our many channels.
  • Craft email graphics reaching more than 3 million global U-M learners.
  • Develop or expand your graphic design skills to produce marketing materials seen by millions.

There are plenty of ways you can have a big impact on our work in support of the mission of the Center for Academic Innovation as we aim to extend academic excellence, expand public purpose, and end educational privilege.

The Summer 2022 fellowship will be a hybrid with options for in-person and/or remote work. There is no requirement to live in Ann Arbor, but you may need to make accommodations to meet with faculty and staff in accordance with the Eastern time zone. Opportunity for fellowship extension to Fall 2022 semester.


Student fellows could contribute to core functions of the marketing and communication department based on skills and interests. These could include:

  • Conceptualize, design, iterate, and execute print and digital assets in collaboration with teams across the Center for Academic Innovation.
  • Creating graphic assets for the web, including but not limited to, social images, digital advertisements, infographics, email newsletter graphics, etc.
  • Designing print deliverables for events, including but not limited to, posters, flyers, pamphlets, and wayfinding signage.
  • Developing brand identity assets (logos, iconography, etc.).

General requirements for all our fellowships include:

  • Working independently in a multicultural and collaborative environment
  • Working well in an environment with rapidly changing requirements and priorities
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Educational Value

Gain real-world experience working within a dynamic, fast-paced team environment. Develop presentation skills. Flexibility to apply what you’re learning in your classes and focus your fellowship on content creation, graphic design, and other dimensions of marketing and communications.

Specific requirements for this fellowship are as follows:

Required Qualifications:

  • Playful curiosity about innovative projects and learning experiences.
  • Ability to work well in an environment with rapidly changing requirements and priorities.
  • Interest in gaining practical skills in Marketing, Communications, Graphic Design, or related fields.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Canva or Adobe Creative Cloud software.
  • Previous graphic design experience producing content.
