In March 2017, the University of Michigan launched its Teach-Out Series, building on the tradition of Teach-Ins which originated at Michigan in 1965. Teach-Outs bring together people from around the world to learn about, discuss and address important topics in society. Michigan’s Teach-Outs follow a new model of public engagement – brief, participatory learning experiences followed by opportunities for dialogue amongst participants. In our first two years of the Teach-Out Series, we’ve created 23 Teach-Outs and reached more than 76,000 participants.
In 2018, we offered the first Teach-Out Academy as an opportunity for like-minded institutions to learn how to develop Teach-Outs of their own. Just like the Teach-In model spread to universities across the country, we are beginning to see the Teach-Out model expanding beyond the University of Michigan with other institutions, like the University of Notre Dame, the University of Leiden, Emory University and Davidson College, who are interested in pushing the boundaries of online learning experiences by offering Teach-Out experiences of their own.
In 2019, the University of Michigan will once again host this hands-on workshop where teams will develop an idea from inception through design, and leave the Academy with an action plan for launching their own Teach-Out.
This event includes a deep dive into the design of Teach-Outs, a discussion of production processes for just-in-time content, guidance on developing calls to action, brainstorms on strategies for public engagement, and explorations of promotion and communication strategies. In addition, attendees will benefit from close collaboration and networking with a small, focused cohort of like-minded institutions looking to establish their own Teach-Out initiatives.
Is Financial Support Provided? The University of Michigan has a limited number of grants available for teams that cannot obtain funding from their institution but can commit to launching a Teach-Out in the next 12 months. To inquire about receiving a grant, e-mail email@example.com.
Who Should Attend? We recommend a two-person team comprised of a faculty member and an instructional designer, media designer, or project manager who will be directly involved in developing a Teach-Out at their institution.
