Ji Hyun Yu

Learning Experience Designer

Why I Choose to Work at Academic Innovation:

“When I first learned about the Center for Academic Innovation, I was captured by the vision: shaping the future of learning and refining public residential education by enabling personalization at scale, curricular innovation, and leadership in learning analytics. I had pondered these concepts as a researcher, as a parent, and as an online faculty member and knew that they would remain buzzwords rather than strategic accomplishments, until institutional leaders and educators would benefit from changing how they approach and design learning experiences. The portfolio and future action plan of Academic Innovation convinced me that this is the place where I can see those breakthroughs can be realized and I can tremendously grow in a professional way.”

Current Roles/Previous Experience:

Ji Hyun works as the Learning Experience Designer for the School of Social Work (SSW). She works closely with faculty to develop research-based curricula and disseminate innovative teaching practices for residential, online, and hybrid courses and programs. She also collaborates with Center for Academic Innovation staff to explore and design ways to create authentic learning experiences in a variety of educational settings.

Prior to joining the the Center, Ji Hyun worked for the Hub for Teaching and Learning Resources at the UM-Dearborn and taught graduate courses at Virginia Tech and Purdue University. Before moving to the field of higher education, she worked at Samsung CREDU, where she specialized in the area of competency-based curriculum and strategic assessment development. Her design practice focuses on the principles of learner-centered pedagogy that promote critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Her areas of interest include case-based/project-based learning, online/blended teaching and learning, metacognition, personalized learning, and learning analytics.
