Raven Lanier

Copyright Specialist

Why I Choose to Work at Academic Innovation:

While working in the Center for Academic Innovation, I get to tackle a wide variety of new and exciting copyright issues and help faculty and design teams make the highest quality educational content. I also enjoy exploring the challenges and opportunities copyright law presents for online education.”

Current Roles/Previous Experience:

Raven provides the Center for Academic Innovation with intellectual property expertise, specifically in copyright law. In her role, Raven teaches faculty about copyright in the online education space, covering issues like Creative Commons, open education, and fair use, and works closely with faculty in the development of their courses. She provides copyright clearance for all of Academic Innovation’s online learning experiences. She also provides general guidance to the Academic Innovation team on any copyright issues that arise out of their work.

Raven started at Academic Innovation in law school as a student fellow. During law school, she was also an Audio Licensing Intern at NPR. At NPR she worked closely with general counsel to protect and document NPR’s copyrighted content. Raven also works half-time at the University of Michigan Library Copyright Office, where she teaches faculty, staff, and students about copyright law and provides copyright guidance to the library and general university community.

Raven is a licensed attorney in the state of Michigan.
