Jacob Fortman

Learning Experience Design Certificate Coordinator

Why I Choose to Work at Academic Innovation:

I chose to work at Academic Innovation because I am passionate about the mission of public higher education, and I am excited about the new learning opportunities available through emerging media and technology. Additionally, I enjoy working with a team of collaborative, altruistic, and passionate people.

Current Roles/Previous Experience:

Jacob is the Learning Experience Design (LXD) Certificate Coordinator at the Center for Academic Innovation (CAI). In this role, Jacob works collaboratively with the LXD team and the LXD student residents to design, develop, and implement innovative learning experiences at CAI. Jacob is passionate about the value student perspective can bring to design projects, and is always looking for ways to authentically integrate students into projects at CAI.

Prior to this role, Jacob was a music instructor in a variety of K-12, non-profit, and informal learning settings. Some of his past experiences include: teaching hip-hop music and literacy in Detroit, coordinating a story-telling concert about the lives of refugees in America, and teaching pre-school music lessons in East Lansing. While earning his undergraduate and graduate degrees in education, Jacob’s academic and personal interests centered on the relationships between power, culture, and identity in education. He is particularly interested in educational theories related to critical pedagogy and post-structuralism.
