Will Potter

Senior Academic Innovation Fellow in Digital Storytelling

Why I Choose to Work at Academic Innovation:

Being part of the Teach-Outs hooked me on all of the bold, transformative work the Center for Academic Innovation is doing, both in the higher ed and media spaces!”

Current Roles/Previous Experience:

Will is both a faculty member in the Department of English, where he teaches courses on investigative journalism, literary nonfiction, and multimedia techniques. He is also the Center for Academic Innovation’s Senior Fellow in Digital Storytelling. Most of his career has been spent as an investigative journalist: he was the first journalist to be selected as a TED Senior Fellow, and has been invited to present his work before the United States Congress, Australian Parliament, and Council of Europe. His first book, Green Is the New Red, exposed how environmentalists became labeled as the number one domestic terrorism threat by the FBI. He’s currently finishing a major multimedia investigation into the factory farming industry, and also working with students on a massive Freedom of Information Act campaign exposing the U.S. history of spying on journalists. His bigger mission at U-M is to revitalize our storied history of journalism education, but not a traditional program: he aspires to create a new model of journalism and storytelling education that is also publicly engaged, multidisciplinary, and applicable throughout higher education.
