Software Engineering Fellow

Pay Rate: Master’s $20/hr, Doctoral $23/hr

Job Duration: 10-15 hours/week for the fall 2026 semester, with the possibility of extending the fellowship

Who We’re Looking For:

We are looking for well-rounded, motivated and flexible fellows to help us design, build, and scale AI features for teaching and learning. We are a collaborative, agile team dedicated to creating a world-class, data-driven, and personalized destination for online education.

What You’ll Do:

  • Design, build, and test AI-powered features and applications that enhance teaching and learning experiences.
  • Develop and integrate applications using large language models (LLMs), modern web technologies, and cloud-based APIs.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, learning experience designers, researchers, and product specialists in an agile, cross-functional environment.
  • Regularly participate in Student Fellowship Program (SFP) events, professional development sessions, workshops, and community-building activities.

Experience and Skills You’ll Gain:

  • Hands-on experience building production-ready AI applications for education using state-of-the-art technologies.
  • Experience working with large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, structured outputs, tool/function calling, and AI application development.
  • Exposure to modern software engineering practices, including agile development, code reviews, testing, and collaborative Git workflows.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of software engineers, designers, researchers, faculty, and product leaders.

Student Qualifications:

  • Current U-M student enrolled in a master’s degree or higher program at the Ann Arbor campus studying or with related experience in computer science, computer engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Strong commitment to problem-solving, teamwork, and the ability to act independently
  • Eager to learn new technologies and skills
  • Experience with one or more object-oriented programming languages
