Generative AI can create new opportunities for student learning, but what students gain from AI depends on how the technology is designed and integrated into a course.

Drawing on several years of work in introductory physics, Miller will share findings from controlled studies of AI tutoring and the semester-long integration of an AI learning platform. She will examine how pedagogical design shapes students’ interactions with AI, how students use AI when it becomes part of a course, and how those interactions relate to learning outcomes.

What can this evidence teach us about the role AI should play in teaching and learning? Miller will consider how educators can make thoughtful choices about when and how to use AI to support students. The session will offer a research-informed perspective on designing AI tools and learning experiences that extend effective teaching rather than replace it.

 

About Kelly Miller

Kelly Miller is a faculty member at Harvard University’s John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where she teaches project-based, team-based physics and engineering courses. Her research explores active learning, AI-supported instruction, and the design of effective learning environments. She is the Chief Learning Officer at Collage-AI and a co-founder of Perusall, a collaborative learning platform. Her recent work examines how generative AI can improve student learning, engagement, and access to personalized feedback while supporting evidence-based teaching practices.
