Student XR Developer Fellow

Pay Rate: Undergraduate $17/hr, Master’s $20/hr, Doctoral $23/hr 

Job Duration: 10-15 hours/week for the Fall 2026 semester, with the possibility of extending the fellowship

Who we’re looking for: 

The XR Team at the Center for Academic Innovation (https://ai.umich.edu/xr-projects/) is looking for part-time help developing educational XR experiences across the University using the Unreal Engine, webXR and other 3D content authoring tools.

What You’ll Do: 

  • Develop a VR experience in Unreal 
    • Design and implement gameplay using Blueprints 
    • Create 3D animations 
    • Integrate audio voice-over and FX
  • Develop webXR experiences using 3D web frameworks and libraries such as Aframe, three.js and babylon.js
  • Modify, prepare, and optimize 3D models (using any 3D modeling software such as Blender or Maya) for WebXR deployment.
  • Work with VR headsets to deploy and maintain in-house VR applications, ensuring applications and devices remain up to date.
  • Maintain clear documentation of your work, including workflows and technical decisions
  • Conduct user testing 
  • Interact with and present to clients (UM faculty) 
  • Regularly participate in Student Fellowship Program (SFP) events, professional development sessions, workshops, and community-building activities.

Student Qualifications: 

  • Current U-M student enrolled in a degree or online degree program at the Ann Arbor campus
  • Experience with designing and developing VR/AR experiences 
  • Experience with Unreal Engine 5 
  • Experience with Web development
  • Experience with Game design 
  • Familiarity with source control practices (e.g. Git, Perforce)
