U-M Ann Arbor faculty are eligible to apply for funds from Academic Innovation. Further details about our eligibility requirements are available in the Faculty Status Policy. Applications to the AIF are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the calendar year; additionally, there will be periodic calls for proposals requesting submissions around certain areas for experimentation, disciplinary topics, and/or strategic initiatives.
We have added a simple Letter of Intent (LOI) to the process of applying for support from the AIF to ensure that faculty innovators get more feedback on their proposed idea before composing and submitting a full proposal. After receiving feedback on your LOI and being invited to move on to the formal proposal stage, you’ll be asked to provide more information about your Initiative, including:
- A list of the Initiative team members and their expertise related to the Initiative
- The goals of the Initiative, the markers of success, and anticipated challenges for reaching those markers
- The impact of this Initiative on U-M learners and residential education
- The alignment between your Initiative and the strategic goals of Academic Innovation, your school/college, and/or the University
The criteria by which proposals are evaluated include how the Initiative contributes to a culture of innovation in learning on campus, the type and scale of the problem the Initiative aims to solve and the degree of innovation in the approach. We also consider the type of partnership expected, the alignment of the idea with other initiatives and goals on campus, including how the Initiative might impact the diversity, equity and inclusiveness of campus.
For most Initiatives, you will need to submit a budget and brief budget justification. For MOOC proposals, a budget is not necessary. Allowable expenses for monetary requests include funds for staff and student effort, external partners and collaborators, event logistics, travel and other Initiative-appropriate items.
We look forward to receiving your Letter of Intent and hearing about your interest in furthering Academic Innovation at U-M.
