Advancing Undergraduate Education Symposia Series: The Opportunity Gap | College Access & Recruitment

October 6 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am EDT

Description

“Talent is equally distributed, but opportunity is not”

As colleges and universities focus attention on student enrollment and affordability, we know that for many students access to a quality education remains a privilege. The Advancing Undergraduate Education Symposia Series will explore the ways in which the University of Michigan can extend academic excellence while advancing equitable access and attainment to an undergraduate education.

Throughout the year the series will create spaces for conversations on collective work to cultivate the future of blended learning in higher education. Each session will explore the intersection of academic innovation, research and trends, emerging models and current practices with a panel of thought leaders, as well as include time for collaborative brainstorming with colleagues to tackle some of the access and opportunity challenges we face as an institution.

Light refreshments will be provided. Registration is required.

Session 1: The Opportunity Gap | College Access & Recruitment

Thursday, October 6, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Kuenzel Room, Michigan Union

The State of Michigan continues to face declines in college enrollment among high school graduates, including significant declines in enrollment for economically disadvantaged and underrepresented minority students. Join us as we discuss the challenge question: How might we leverage and scale existing resources to expose, support, and attract students from local under-resourced schools to the University of Michigan?

Format:

Panel Discussion (40 mins)

Panelists will share insights and models to address the challenge statement above.

Lightning Design Jam (40 mins)

Attendees will ‘jam’ together to surface ideas to address access and equity within pathways to and through undergraduate education.

Panelists:

  • Cyekeia Lee, Detroit College Access Network
  • Kim Lijana, Center for Educational Outreach
  • Lyonel Milton, CoE Center for Engineering Diversity & Outreach
