Juan Sarmiento - From Human-centered design to the design of human systems: Participatory Design in Learning Analytics

The talk will examine some of the known pitfalls of non-human centered design as well as the common shortcomings of user-centered approaches, which often prioritize ease of use without considering broader impacts to stakeholders or systems. As a means to address some of these challenges in Learning Analytics, we will present case studies of participatory design, a methodology that involves all stakeholders in the design process and can help to reveal the complexity of the systems in which design artifacts are situated. We will argue that participatory approaches can shift the focus of design from individual artifacts to that of larger human systems, inquiring into the role that technology and LA plays in them.
