Jacob Aguinaga

Learning Experience Designer Senior

Why I Choose to Work at Academic Innovation

I chose to work at Academic Innovation because it allowed me the opportunity to utilize my teaching experience to design educational experiences that can benefit learners both on campus and around the world. I dreamed of working for the University from the first day I set foot on campus as an undergraduate, so I have always kept an eye out for a place I could fit in. As a graduate student, I enjoyed the challenges I experienced as a part of the Learning Experience Design certificate program and internship at Academic Innovation. I was fortunate that following graduation is was able to stay at Academic Innovation and join the Learning Experience Design team in a full-time position.

Current Roles/Previous Experience

As a Learning Experience Designer, Jacob works to design online educational experiences and assist campus faculty in incorporating digital tools into their instruction. In his work, Jacob draws on theories of backward design and universal design for learning, as well as social constructivist and motivational learning theories. In collaborating with faculty members, Jacob guides them in writing specific, measurable learning goals, and in designing assessments that effectively allow learners to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have gained from a learning experience.

Prior to joining Academic Innovation as a Learning Experience Designer, Jacob earned a masters degree from the University of Michigan. As a part of his coursework, he worked as an intern at Academic Innovation with the Learning Experience Design team. Jacob has also spent time as a middle school and a high school teacher. Over his 5 years of teaching experience, Jacob taught environmental science, chemistry, physics, geology, earth science, and careers in Indiana and Michigan. In each of these subjects, he engaged students in working to solve real-world problems through critical thinking skills and collaborative efforts.
