XR Events and Equipment Fellow

Pay Rate: Undergraduate $17/hr, Master’s $20/hr, Doctoral $23/hr
Job Duration: 10 – 15 hours/week for the winter 2025 semester, with the possibility of extending the fellowship unto the next semester

Who We’re Looking For:

We’re seeking an independent, detail-oriented, and reliable student to join the Center for Academic Innovation’s XR team and support our growing portfolio of Extended Reality (XR) initiatives. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of immersive technology in academia, helping to shape innovative learning experiences for students and faculty alike.

As an XR Events and Equipment Fellow, you will play a vital role in managing and maintaining our inventory of XR devices, including VR headsets, AR tools, and accessories. You will assist with equipment check-out processes, ensure proper tracking and handling, and provide basic technical support to troubleshoot hardware and software issues. In addition to equipment management, you’ll assist with the planning and executing of XR-related events, workshops, and demonstrations.

What You’ll Do:

  • Maintain a suite of XR technologies, including headsets (Meta Quest, Hololens, Apple Vision Pro) and 360 cameras.
  • Loan XR equipment to U-M faculty, staff, and students. 
  • Manage accounts and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Support demonstrations of the XR equipment with campus partners.
  • Iterate on organizational practices and create documentation.
  • Plan and execute XR-related events, workshops, and demos.
  • Collaborate with campus departments to promote XR initiatives.
  • Set up and break down XR stations for events.
  • Assist participants in using XR technology during events.
  • Develop instructional guides or FAQs for XR equipment use.

Required Student Qualifications:

  • Interest in virtual, augmented, and mixed reality.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to take on unfamiliar, complex tasks that require specific processes.
  • Ability to keep track of equipment and event schedules.
  • Attention to detail when maintaining devices or planning events.
  • Willingness to assist with setup, cleanup, and participant support.
  • Working well independently in a multicultural and collaborative environment.
  • Working well in an environment with rapidly changing requirements and priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Desired Student Qualifications (Not Required to Apply):

  • Experience in organizing or supporting events.
  • Experience with XR headsets.
  • Experience with Google Sheets, Team Dyanmix, Cheqroom, Asana, or similar organizational tools.
  • Ability to create and improve upon organizational processes and draft process documentation
